Textual Analysis of Plan B

We did a group analysis of the video so we could better understand how conventions are seen in music videos and how colours, shots and framing are seen in a music video.

Plan B- Writing's On The Wall

What is the genre of the artist/ video? The genre of the video is pop, however the genre of the artist or more toward the rap/ soul genre.

Is there a typical narrative? As the whole the narrative of the video is relatively typical. It involves a seemingly stable relation which throughout the video goes downhill until the end there the character Strickland Banks cheats on his girlfriend.

What is expected? It is expected that you would see Plan B appearing the in the video.

What was unexpected? It was unexpected that there was no attempt to repair the problem by the end of the video.

Are there any references? There are links to other videos as the entire album is based on a character/ alter ego of Plan B, ‘Strickland Banks’ which is also the main character in this video.

There are three of the five stages of TODOROV’s theory of equilibrium; equilibrium, at the beginning when the relationship seems stable, disruption, when the male character does not return home, and recognition when the girlfriend realises there is an issue with her boyfriend not coming home.

In this video there are three recognisable characters, the false hero (the boyfriend) the villain (the girl he cheats with) and the princess (the girlfriend)

The video reflects some of the lyrics in the song, such as “we’ll be no more” showing the relationship was never really very strong.

In this video there are somewhat stereotypical representations of gender, where the woman is seen at home cooking while the main character is out with friends.

The artists alter ego has been represented as a villain as well as being a famous celebrity.

There are two main settings in this video  the home where the woman is seen cooking and a club where the male character is seen with other women.

The dominant colours seen in the video are very pure bright colours seen in the house, to show the innocence of the woman and how she is the victim in this situation. You also see very dark colours in the club showing that the villain in the video is Strickland Banks.

There are a number of low angles seen on Strickland Banks, which shows the power he has, and a number of high angles on the girl to show he vulnerability.

There a number of close ups on Strickland Banks and the woman so show emotion. There is also a full body tilt on the girl he cheats with, this is to attract a male audience. There is a shot of the woman burning herself on a pan, this may connote a burned relationship, there is also a slightly duct angle used as Strickland Banks and his friends walk into another club, which shows that the group are drunk.

In this video there are a number of POV shots from Strickland Banks’ view so we can see things from his perspective.

The editing in this video is fasted paced and continuous of a large amount of cuts.

The video is aimed at fans of Plan B and girls in there early 20’s, this is because there are a large number of characters in their 20’s and Plan B wears a suit which appeals to the girls, it is aimed at a demographic group of E/D

Warner Brothers and the company for the album.

There are things in the video which are part of the image of Plan B, he is seen in a suit and he is also promoted as a popular celebrity.
