Analysis of a Slipknot digipack

This is a digipack by the artist Slipknot. I am analysing this digipak as it is for a very well known band in a similar genre to our chosen artist.
This digipack has eight sides including lyric booklets, track lists and pictures as well as the CD. Each side of the digipack has a different image however they all tie into the theme. On the inside of the digipak there are four panels that consist of a lyric booklet the CD with an image behind it, a panel containing copywrite and record label information as well as an image of the band. On the outside of the digipack there is another image of the band as an album cover, a picture page that relates to the album and a track list. This looks very professional as all images and ideas fit the same idea and the pre-existing  motifs created by the band. The colours used in the digipak are mostly reds black and white, and some blue, this is similar to other albums and photos they have done before this digipak and the theme of dark colours, as seen in a more resent digipack:
Similar to the vast majority of there videos and their photo-shoots they always wear masks and boiler suits which is seen in this digipack as well as seeing the barcode and S symbols seen in the majority of their work.

The colours that are used in their digipacks are often seen in other digipacks in this genre, this is because the dark colours seen will often link to their videos and 'dark' themes that run through there lyrics.

Digipack and Magazine advert importance

A digipak is a type of packaging for a CD or a DVD. It consists of cardboard panels and panels that can hold either CDs or DVDs. Digipacks are important because it allows fans of artists or people interested in the CD or DVD to get something other than just a CD. Digipacks often contains other things such as additional information such as tracklists, lyrics books as well as pictures of the artist and other pictures that link to the album.

Magazine adverts allow artists to advertise the album as well as show fans and other potential fans what they are releasing a new album. A magazine advert often shows the band name, album title and a picture that links with the cover image. Most if not all magazine adverts also have shops and website where the album can be purchased. They will also often have reviews from other music magazines and record company information.

Theories in music videos

the cultivation theory/ the drip effect:

The cultivation theory suggests that over time exposer to media such as television and music videos will 'cultivate' the viewers perception of reality.
In relation the music videos this theory states that messages sent to the audience though the music video will have an affect on the audience.
For example:
  •  In many mainstream music video you will see voyeuristic treatment of a woman's body  as stated by Andrew Goodwin. When a male audience sees a music video where women are represented in this way for example Robin Thike's 'Blurred Lines', they may also begin to treat woman in this way as they seen it in a mainstream form of media.
  • You may also see a  large number of music videos where alcohol and drugs are glamourised, when an audience, especially a younger audience see this they may believe that it is acceptable for them to act in a similar way and not understand the effects of this because they only see the glamorise side of it in the music video.
