Arctic Monkeys- When the Sun Goes Down
The genre of the video is alternative, this is the same of
the band which are classed as indie/ alternative
There is a relatively common narrative, it involves a
relationship but has a large amount of real life situations found is certain
social groups.
It was expected that where would be drug dealing in the
video from reading the lyrics. However the band did not appear in the video
once which was quite unexpected.
There are references to other media, this is because the
song was used in an independent film, and therefore there is a large amount of
footage from the short film seen in this video.
The story line involves a drug dealer and a sex worker
The theme of the video is relationships
There are recognisable characters such as the main female
character and the main male character which are both lower class.
The types of character: chavs/lower class follows the lyrics
quite closely, and there is also a reference to Roxxane which is another film
There are representations of class, with lack of jobs.
Gender showing men are dominant, age- the older have more power, careers- as
sex workers and the video being located on a council estate
As the characters can be seen as chavs, they have a
stereotypical sense of fashion, jobs and location.
The artist are independent and don’t appear in the video so
are not made out to be stars.
All of the actors seen in the video are independent.
The video is set in a public place where there is a higher level
of crime
There are a large amount of grey and dull tonnes seen in
this video to connote the depressing storyline and location
There are everyday situations seen in this video, the fancy
typography contrasts from the story/ narrative
The editing in this video only really involves are large
amount of fasted paced cuts
The target audience for this video would be fans of the band
as well as fans of the film,
